    Dies ist die dritte Version einer der bekanntesten Kompositionen Friedrichs, die erste (1819) befindet sich in Dresden, die zweite (ca. 1824) in Berlin. Die zwei Männer, die bei ihrem Abendspaziergang durch einen spätherbstlichen Wald innehalten und den untergehenden Mond betrachten, wurden als Friedrich selbst (rechts) und sein begabter junger Kollege August Heinrich identifiziert. Die Atmosphäre der andächtigen Betrachtung stellt die Faszination über den Mond dar, wie sie auch in Gedichten, Literatur, Philosophien und Musik aus jener Zeit zu finden ist.
