Introduction
1Between 2012 and 2014, every time I returned to Kathmandu from conducting doctoral dissertation research in Nepal’s western Tarai, I would attend a Christian Nepali1 youth fellowship on Saturday afternoons in Patan. After one of these fellowships, I was handed an invitation to a ‘coffee party’, sponsored by Top of the World Coffee – a local fair-trade coffee company – featuring the Christian Nepali band Hephzibah. This event turned out to be much more than an informal gathering. It was a full concert. The organisers transformed the drab brick-and-mortar church building in which it took place by hanging paper lanterns in warm colours on the metal beams across the ceiling and sprinkling lighting in cool colours across the stage (fig 1). While people sit on the floor for Nepali church services, plastic chairs were set up in rows for this event. Most of the audience members were young, urban Nepalis in their teens and early twenties. They arrived in groups of men or women. As promised, Top of the World served free, black coffee – no chia (N milk tea) was in sight!
