Hellé Nice, née Hélène Delangle, was a can-can dancer, sometimes nude model and the toast of the Paris arts community in the early s. By all accounts, she was stunningly beautiful, frustratingly mercurial and incredibly headstrong. And, even in the burgeoning sexual revolution of early 20th-century France, she was what modern day evangelists would call “of loose morals.” Promiscuous doesn’t begin to describe her sexual appetite; she was a polyamorist long before it was fashionable and was most probably bisexual. Her trail of sexual conquests (including Phillipe de Rothschild) would impress Hugh Hefner. She bared her breasts (and more) in many a revue, bedded as many as three men at a trot and never once apologized for living the life usually reserved for the high-stepping male playboys of the day. She was, to use the quaint euphemism of the time, a fallen woman.

I recently received my membership documents from the GRRC (Goodwood Road Racing Club) and a week or so later the annual luxurious and quite brilliant Goodwood Magazine. Of course it presents a style of life and expenditure that I can only dream of in real terms but this issue was particularly interesting with superbly illustrated articles on the Porsche (50th birthday), William Knight the outstanding Goodwood horse trainer, the racing legend Jimmy Clark, the Boultbee Spitfire Academy where you can train to fly a Spitfire and a celebration of two decades of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. I managed to attend the Goodwood Revival in  in my concours MG TC (black with Apple-green Collingburn interior) and am still recovering from the cost from Warsaw of that sublime weekend.
